The History of the Star Trek TV Series

Star Trek is a franchise spanning many decades. It’s a Sci-Fi fiction project that spans galaxies, centuries and, by now, is available in many media; computer games, television shows and novels, as well as movies. This article will give an overview of the various television series, as they are the most popular of the Star Trek media, and they also provide context about the universe in which Star Trek takes place. The series are listed by their original air date, although the chronology of the series is slightly different as Star Trek: Enterprise is a prequel. Star Trek: The Original Series

Star Trek, now clarified as Star Trek: The Original Series, is a show that ran from 1966 through to 1969. It starred William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley. The show was about crew members of the star ship Enterprise. The show was set in the Milky Way Galaxy. It takes place in an unknown year that is believed to be around 2260 AD.

The show would be cancelled after three seasons. However, it would go on to become a cult classic, which would lead to its resurgence decades later, and for it to become a huge media franchise.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Star Trek: the Next Generation would be the next live-action television series under the moniker of the Star Trek mantle. Filmed in 1987 through to 1994. The show was set in 2364 – one hundred years after the events described in the original Star Trek series. The television show followed the fifth crew of the star ship Enterprise. The cast was entirely different, and starred Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton and Denise Crosby, amongst others.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is the third series in the Star Trek franchise. It is set in the same time period as the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation. In order to not have two concurrent shows set in different spacecraft, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is the only show of the five series to be set not on a ship, but on a space station. The show ran from 1993 to 1999. It stars Avery Brooks, Rene Auberjonois, Terry Farrell and Cirroc Lofton, among others.

Star Trek: Voyager

Star Trek Voyager is the fifth series in the Star Trek franchise. It is the first to be set outside the Milky Way, and is named after the ship whose crew star in the show: The USS Voyager. The show stars Kate Mulgrew, Robert Beltran, Roxann Dawson and Jennifer Len, and the show takes place in the 2370’s.

Star Trek: Enterprise

Star Trek: Enterprise, whilst being the latest show in terms of air date, is a prequel to the original. It is set in 2151. This makes the events of the show 150 years previous to the events of Star Trek: The Original Series. Once again, it follows the crew of the Starfleet USS Enterprise. Star Trek: Enterprise ran from 2001 through to 2005. It stars Scott Bakula, John Billinsley, Jolene Blalock and Dominic Keating amongst others.
